The Demand Case Changed

For most of the last decade the argument for copper and nickel was electric vehicles. It is now something larger and considerably less elastic. Data centres, grid rebuilds and defence procurement have stacked on top of the electrification curve, and none of them substitute away from copper at any price a builder would notice: copper is a rounding error in the cost of a hyperscale facility and a hard constraint on whether it gets built at all.

S&P Global puts world copper consumption on a path from roughly 28 million tonnes in 2025 to 42 million tonnes by 2040. The IEA's Global Critical Minerals Outlook 2026 finds that primary copper supply could fall about 25 percent short of demand by 2035 on the current project pipeline, and notes that this assumes every announced project arrives on schedule.

Coniagas holds The Graal in Saguenay, Québec: copper, nickel and cobalt with platinum and palladium showings, near surface along a six kilometre strike, in a large Bouguer gravity anomaly. Almost every hole drilled to date has hit massive or semi-massive sulphide, and results so far support an open-pit model. Polymetallic is the point. Proceeds from one metal can carry the cost of producing another.

Refining metal is the business of buying electricity and selling chemistry. That is the whole of the advantage the West spent thirty years handing over: not ore, but cheap firm power sitting next to the plants that consume it. Rhodium Group's 2026 study of China's industrial metals ecosystem puts more than a third of Chinese manufacturing electricity into metals and materials production alone.

Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean is one of the few places outside that system built on the same logic and by accident rather than design. The region's heavy industry exists because the hydro does. The power is firm rather than intermittent, which is what smelters and refineries actually require, and the grid was sized for industrial load a century before anyone used the word reindustrialization.

Add deep-water port access to the St. Lawrence, road and rail already serving the region, and a provincial government that in January 2026 committed $88.1 million to a 2025-2031 critical minerals strategy naming artificial intelligence, defence and aerospace as the sectors it intends to supply. The Graal sits inside that, not beside it.

On 7 November 2025 the United States published its Final 2025 List of Critical Minerals, adding copper and silver. Cobalt, nickel and arsenic were already on it. Every element in this company's name is now designated critical by the United States, along with the copper at the centre of the Graal.
